Several years ago........Ok here is what sucks in Oregon...I learned first hand the hard way, because I was ignorant.
I was told by a lady I respect in the horse business, when it came to dental work it is best to have an educated equine dentsit. vets take a short course in vet school on equine dental and not all further their studies. So when my old farrier left farrier work to attend equine dental school in another state I jumped at the chance to be added to his list of patients. His fees were very inexpensive he set up a dental care place on his ranch. If we hauled our horses to his place dental care was half the cost of having any vet look in our horses mouth.
On one occassion I purchased an old Appy mare first thing I did was call him up to come out and attend to her teeth. He had to make one extraction but did not have any antibiotics on hand and reccomended a dose for precautionary measures. I told that I was in good with my vet I would stop by his officve the next day and pick up a dose. I called my vet to let him know I would be stopping by and oddly he wanted to see the horse first. So he came out and examed the horse.
The vet became very angry that the horse dentist had done the work was excusing him of grinding the horses teeth down to much I ensured the vet. That the horses teeth were in that shape before the dentist went to work on them I was given a clear view and feel of the horses teeth before work was started. It was then that I was informed it is against the law in the state of Oregon for cetified horse dentist to practice in Oregon and that the state veternary board does not recognise those schools.
A month later I found out they were suing the dentisit I used and wanted me testify against him. I replied I would not as I had no complaints. they threatened me over the phone I was so angry at my vet for usign my case to sue the dentist and so angry at the dentist for not telling me what he was doign was against the law. I told them I was not having anything to do with any of it.
In the end the dentist paid a fine of the cost of my vet bill after his dental visit.
I just use my vet to do my dental. I have friend who has three horses she actually ships them out of state to have dental work done by a equine dentist.
